Course Outline: An Ice Day

This course will introduce you to the sport of ice climbing. By the end of the course you will have learned the basics of ice climbing in a top-rope setting.

Group Size: 6 Participants, Minimum of 4

Cost: see price list. 6 climbs for the price of 5

Course Length: 1 day (1/3 day theory and 2/3 day climbing)

Climbing: Most students in this course climb an average of 300 feet!

Location: Batchawana Bay-Mile 38 Road

Prerequisite: None, but an adventurous spirit is welcome!

Practical Skills Learned During This Course

  1. How to climb, traverse and down climb an ice wall.
  2. The tying and use of basic knots in ice climbing.
  3. Recognition and the use of natural anchors for belaying and top-rope anchors.
  4. How to belay properly using a mechanical belay device as well as the use of belayer /climber signals.
  5. Most Beginners climb at least 300 feet in this course,inclding up and down on three separate ropes.
Theoretical Skills Learned During This Course
  1. What is ice climbing, top-roped climbing and how it relates to the sport of climbing and mountaineering.
  2. History and development of ice climbing in the region and its significance.
  3. Ice formation, crystal structure, bonding, and strength of ice faces.
  4. Safety Considerations in ice climbing and the applications to the top-roped environment.
